A Key Ritual

This is a beautiful Key Ritual ~ used in an adoption ceremony for Freddie, who has just turned 13 and celebrating with his family and best friends.

A Key Ritual

I start...

Freddie, today is the day you have been waiting for in your short and young lifetime.  Your adoption before your 13th Birthday means you have a mum and dad who will look after you and treasure every breath you take from now till eternity.

Since birth you have been waiting to join your forever family.  Ditto, your parents knew that one day their family would be complete, with a loving, handsome son, they hadn’t however anticipated that he would be a West Ham football supporter!!

They were also keen that their son would adore bike rides, swimming and fishing, and they have not been disappointed.  You have embraced family life with great gusto Freddie, and your mum and dad are bursting with pride to call you ‘their boy’.

You recently celebrated your and asked your mum and dad how you would celebrate both being a teenager and your official adoption.   As the ‘Three Musketeers’,  you decided to have a garden party to celebrate, which is why we are all here today.

Grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, mum and dad’s best friends and Freddie, your best friends, George, Aadi and twin sister Prisha are all here to celebrate with you.

But before the party starts, your mum and dad have something for you…

(At this point the parents step forward and both kneel down to the same height as Freddie, they have a shiny silver key on a leather key fob in the shape of the letter ‘F’ which is also tied with a long green ribbon)

I continue…

Every key shaped and moulded is done so to work with only one particular lock.  And by having a key, you have something, somewhere that is extremely precious and definitely worth locking and unlocking.

Shellie, of all the children in the world, you fell in love with Freddie, she replies,

‘I did, and I do.  I will always love Freddie, and am proud to call him my son, and will for the rest of my life”.

Greg, of all the children in the world, you fell in love with Freddie, he replies,

“ I did, he is the best son a father could ever wish for, and I will look after him as my loving, funny and clever son for the rest of my life, but I’ll still support Man United”.

I continue…

Keys down the generations have been made to last, and keys today remain the same, Shellie and Greg; you have a present for your boy?

(This has been rehearsed)

“Freddie, we both love you very much, we are overjoyed to have you in our life, we give you this key, it is the to your home, tied with a green ribbon, the colour green represents balance in life and unconditional love.

And this is what we will always offer you.

We promise to always give you our guidance, kindness, honesty, our knowledge of life, our time, our sense of fun and above all, you are always safe with us son, in this, your family home.”

The parents both kiss the key to the front door of their home, before they hand it to Freddie.

The short ceremony continues …

(What Freddie won’t know until tomorrow, is that the ‘Three Musketeers’ are also going to Florida on a family holiday to celebrate in two weeks time…)

with love
